Welcome to the Game Boy forum. This is KZE's home for Nintendo's classic handhelds: the original Game Boy, Game Boy Pocket and Light, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, the Game Boy Advance SP and the Game Boy Micro. Collecting, playing, modding, repairing and making brand-new games all belong here. How this forum is organised • General discussion: games, collections, memories, accessories and anything that doesn't fit elsewhere. • Mods & shell swaps: IPS and OLED screens, backlights, shells, buttons, audio, batteries and USB-C charging. • Homebrew & GB Studio: making your own Game Boy games, homebrew releases and development help. • Help & troubleshooting: something isn't working, from dead pixels to a cartridge that won't boot. Where else to post • DS and DSi topics, including playing GBA games on a DS Lite, go in DS & DSi. • Game Boy games played on Switch Online belong in the Switch or Switch 2 forums. • Other classic Nintendo hardware lives in NES, SNES & classic Nintendo, and GameCube & N64. The family at a glance • Original Game Boy (DMG): the brick. Unlit green screen, AA batteries, hugely moddable. • Game Boy Pocket and Light: smaller versions; the Light, released in Japan, has a backlight. • Game Boy Color: colour screen, plays original Game Boy games too. Unlit screen. • Game Boy Advance: widescreen, 32-bit, unlit screen. Plays Game Boy and Color games. • Game Boy Advance SP: clamshell with a rechargeable battery. The AGS-001 is frontlit; the AGS-101 is backlit and much brighter. • Game Boy Micro: tiny, backlit, plays GBA games only. Things worth knowing • Modern IPS screen kits transformed these consoles, but they vary in quality and fit. Check which shell a kit needs before buying. • Many cartridges with save files use a small coin battery. When it dies, the save is lost. Back up your save before replacing it. • Fake cartridges are common, especially for popular titles. Ask in Help & troubleshooting if you're unsure about one. • You'll need a tri-wing screwdriver for most of these consoles and a security bit for cartridges. The legal bit KZE is homebrew-friendly, not piracy-friendly. No ROMs, BIOS files or links to where to find them, and no requests for them. Flashcarts are welcome for homebrew and your own dumped games. If you want to play your cartridges another way, dump them yourself with a proper cart reader. House rules All the usual KZE rules apply: be kind, write in English (posts in other languages are translated automatically), no spam, no keyboard mashing and no self-promotion spam. Please Report anything that breaks the rules. This thread is locked, so pick the right subforum and start your own thread. Happy modding, Dexter
