Welcome to the PS1 & PS2 forum. This is home for the consoles that made PlayStation a household name: the original PlayStation, the PSone, the PS2 and the PS2 Slim. Whether you are collecting, restoring, modding or just reliving childhood favourites, you are welcome here.
What this forum covers
Classic PlayStation games and hardware, FreeMcBoot and other softmods, OPL, modchips, optical drive emulators (ODEs), repairs and the joy of playing on original hardware.
Where to post what
Threads go into the subforums:
• General discussion: classic PlayStation games, setups, collections and memories.
• Mods & ODEs: modchips, PicoStation, MechaPwn, OPL, FreeMcBoot and drive emulators.
• Help & troubleshooting: something not working and you want a hand.
When in doubt, ask in Help & troubleshooting and a moderator will move the thread if needed.
Other PlayStation forums
PS3 backwards compatibility questions belong in PS3. Playing PS1 games on handhelds fits the PSP and PS Vita & PS TV forums. The rest of the family has PS5, PS4 and PlayStation Portal & Remote Play.
Starter knowledge
• The PS1 came in many revisions, and the later PSone is the small redesign. Mod options depend on the board revision.
• The PS2 came in fat models and slim models. The model number on the label tells you which.
• Softmods such as FreeMcBoot run from a memory card without opening the console. Which exploit you need depends on model and BIOS version, so check the guides.
• OPL can load your own game backups from USB, a network share, an internal hard drive on fat models with a network adapter, or other storage, depending on your setup.
• ODEs replace the disc drive entirely and load games from an SD card. They are great for consoles with tired lasers.
Display tips
Old consoles look their best with a good cable. Component or RGB SCART usually beats composite, and a good upscaler can help on modern televisions.
The rules that matter most here
KZE is homebrew-friendly but never piracy-friendly. No links to or requests for ROMs, ISOs, BIOS files or where to find them. Rip your own discs and dump your own BIOS from your own console. Only discuss modding your own hardware. No selling or paid modding services.
Safety
Old consoles can have tired capacitors and power supplies. Unplug before opening, take care with soldering and do not work on mains-voltage parts unless you know exactly what you are doing.
House rules
Be kind, English only (other languages are translated automatically), no spam, no keyboard mashing and no self-promotion spam. Please Report anything that breaks the rules. This thread is locked, so start your own thread in the right subforum.
