Welcome to Smart home & IoT Lights that come on when you walk in, sensors that tell you the freezer door is open, dashboards on old tablets. This board covers Home Assistant, ESPHome, Tasmota, Zigbee, Z-Wave, Thread and Matter, MQTT, Node-RED and the hardware that ties it all together. What belongs here • Home Assistant setups, automations and dashboards • ESPHome and Tasmota devices, including reflashing devices you own to local firmware • Zigbee and Z-Wave networks, coordinators and pairing • Thread, Matter, MQTT and integrations • Sensors, smart plugs, bulbs and DIY gadgets • Privacy and local control What goes elsewhere • Microcontroller code beyond ESPHome: ESP32 & microcontrollers • Running Home Assistant on a Pi as a general Pi topic: Raspberry Pi & SBCs • Designing your own sensor boards: Electronics & PCB design • Routers, VLANs and network hardware: Routers & networking in Hacking & modding How to ask so people can help 1. What you run Home Assistant or your hub on, and how it is installed 2. Software and integration versions 3. Device make and model, and the protocol it uses 4. Your YAML or automation, trimmed to the relevant part 5. Expected result versus what happens 6. Relevant log lines Remove passwords, tokens, location details and public IP addresses before posting. Privacy and security • Prefer local control where you can, so your home keeps working and your data stays at home if a cloud service changes or disappears. • Keep Home Assistant, add-ons and device firmware updated. • Change default passwords and use strong, unique ones. • Do not expose your system directly to the internet without understanding the risks. Use a secure remote access method. • Consider putting IoT devices on a separate network. • Cameras and microphones deserve extra care. Respect the privacy of housemates, neighbours and visitors. Safety is part of the rules • Mains wiring, including smart switches, relays and in-wall modules, must be installed by a qualified electrician in line with local regulations. We will not help with DIY mains wiring. • Use certified plugs and devices for anything carrying mains current, and stay within their load ratings. • Lithium packs in DIY sensors still need protection circuits. Board rules • No malware, no tools for getting into devices that are not yours, and nothing piracy-friendly. • No selling and no paid installation services. House rules apply: be kind, English only (other languages are translated automatically), no spam, no keyboard mashing and no self-promotion spam. Use Report if needed.
