Welcome to Reviving old devices. This forum is for the gadgets in the back of the drawer: Kindles and other e-readers, early tablets, BlackBerry phones, Windows Phone and Windows Mobile handsets, Palm and other PDAs, Nokia and Symbian phones, netbooks, old cameras and anything else that is too good to throw away. If it is old and you want to make it useful again, it belongs here. What belongs here • Getting a device to power on, charge and boot again. • Finding replacement batteries, chargers and parts. • Working around services that have been shut down. • Alternative firmware and community projects that keep devices going. • New uses: dashboards, e-paper displays, digital photo frames, offline reference devices. • Collections and nostalgia. What goes elsewhere • Old Android devices you want to flash or root: Android, Custom ROMs & root. • Old iPhones, iPads and the iPod touch: iPhone & iPad, Old iPads & iPhones. • Classic iPods and music players: iPod & music players. • Old smartwatches: Smartwatches & wearables. • Old computers: Windows, macOS & old Macs or PC building & upgrades. • PSP, retro consoles and handhelds have their own sections on KZE. Starter knowledge • Many older devices relied on online services that no longer exist, such as app stores and sync servers. The device may still work well offline. • A device that seems dead is often just a deeply discharged battery. Try the correct charger for a good while before giving up. • Batteries age even when unused. Swollen batteries are a fire risk: do not charge, puncture or squeeze them, and recycle them properly. • Old screens, ribbon cables and plastics get brittle. Go slowly when opening anything. • Write down the exact model number before asking. Many devices came in several versions. • Kindle and e-reader modding depends heavily on the firmware version, so check current community information and avoid automatic updates if you plan to mod. Online safety Old operating systems and browsers do not get security updates. Keep old devices away from important accounts, banking and sensitive logins, and treat them as offline or low-risk gadgets. Legal and safety rules • No piracy: no cracked software, no pirated e-books or apps, and no sites for finding them. Abandoned software is still usually under copyright. • No bypassing activation, account or carrier locks on devices that are not yours. Ask about your own devices only. • No malware and no selling, trading or paid repair services. House rules The general KZE rules apply: be kind, English only (posts in other languages are translated automatically), no spam, no keyboard mashing and no self-promotion spam. Please use Report on anything that breaks the rules. This thread is locked, so start your own thread to show us what you are rescuing. Dexter
