Useful care tips
• Take batteries out of anything you are storing. Leaking batteries are the biggest killer of old gadgets.
• Alkaline battery leaks can often be cleaned with a little white vinegar on a cotton bud, followed by isopropyl alcohol, but wear gloves and take your time.
• Cassette Walkmans use rubber belts that perish with age; if the motor spins but the tape does not move, the belt is a likely culprit.
• Old screens and plastics fade and yellow in sunlight, so keep displays out of direct light.
• Back up data from old devices such as PDAs and MP3 players before experimenting.
Safety first
Swollen lithium batteries should not be charged or punctured; dispose of them safely at a proper recycling point. Old mains-powered equipment can hold dangerous charges inside, and CRTs in particular should only be opened by people who know what they are doing. Younger members should ask an adult before opening anything up.
Rules for this board
• No pirated firmware, software or ROMs for old devices.
• Never post photos showing your address or full order details.
