Welcome to General discussion in the Linux forum.
This is the place to chat about Linux in general: distro news and releases, which distro to try next, desktop environments like GNOME, KDE Plasma, Xfce and Cinnamon, favourite tools and apps, your first week on Linux, or that old laptop you brought back to life with a lightweight install.
What belongs here
• News, releases and opinions.
• Distro and desktop recommendations.
• Software suggestions and alternatives to apps you used on Windows or macOS.
• Command-line tips and favourite tools.
• Switching stories and setups.
What goes elsewhere
• Something broken: Help & troubleshooting.
• Screenshots, themes and dotfiles: Desktops & ricing.
• Games, Proton and Steam: Gaming on Linux.
• Servers and self-hosting: Homelab & self-hosting.
Asking for a distro recommendation
Tell us your hardware (CPU, graphics card and RAM), what you will use it for, how much you want to tinker, and whether you prefer stability or the newest software. That gets far better answers than 'what distro should I use?'.
A few tips
• There is no single best distro. Fixed-release distros change slowly and steadily, rolling-release distros give you newer software but update more often.
• Your desktop environment matters as much as your distro for how things look and feel, and many distros offer several.
• Release dates and support periods change, so check each project's official information.
Keep it friendly
Everyone has a favourite distro and editor. Friendly debate is fine, but no gatekeeping, mocking beginners or starting distro wars.
Legal and safety
No piracy, cracked software or licence keys, and no malware.
House rules
The general KZE rules apply: be kind, English only (posts in other languages are translated automatically), no spam, no keyboard mashing and no self-promotion spam. Use Report on anything that breaks the rules.
