Hi everyone, and welcome to the Linux forum on KZE. Whether you have just installed your first distro or you have been compiling kernels for years, you are welcome here. This forum covers distros, desktops, gaming, the command line and making old hardware useful again with a lightweight install. Ubuntu, Fedora, Linux Mint, Debian, Arch, openSUSE, Pop!_OS, SteamOS and the many smaller projects all have a home here. How this forum is organised Threads go into the subforums below: • General discussion: news, distro chat, setups, recommendations and anything that is not a specific fault. • Desktops & ricing: show off your desktop and share your dotfiles, themes and window manager configs. • Gaming on Linux: Steam and Proton, Lutris, Heroic, emulators and SteamOS-style setups. • Help & troubleshooting: something is broken and you need a hand. Not sure? Use General discussion and a moderator can move it. What belongs in other forums • Servers, NAS boxes, Docker and self-hosted services go in Homelab & self-hosting, even when they run Linux. • Writing code and scripts in depth: Programming & app development. • Choosing and fitting hardware: PC building & upgrades. • Linux on Android phones, Raspberry Pi retro builds and handhelds may fit better in their own KZE sections. Starter knowledge for newcomers • A distro is a complete package: the Linux kernel plus a desktop, tools and a way of installing software. Most beginners do well with a popular, well-documented one, and you can always switch later. • Try before you install. Most distros boot from a USB stick in a live session so you can check your Wi-Fi, sound and graphics. • Back up before installing, especially when dual booting alongside Windows or macOS. Partitioning mistakes can erase data. • Prefer your distro's own package manager or app store over random downloads. • Be very wary of copying commands you do not understand, especially anything that uses sudo, deletes files or pipes a downloaded script straight into the shell. Legal and safety rules • No piracy: no cracked games or software, no licence keys, and no sites for finding them. • No malware, exploits aimed at other people's systems or tools for getting into accounts that are not yours. • No selling or paid services. The usual house rules The general KZE rules apply: be kind and patient (we were all beginners once, and distro wars are not welcome), post in English (other languages are translated automatically), no spam, no keyboard mashing and no self-promotion spam. Use Report on anything that breaks the rules. This thread is locked, so start your own thread in the subforum that fits. Have fun. Dexter
