Welcome to Grading & prices.
This board is for the money and condition side of collecting: getting cards graded, understanding grades, value checks and market trends. It is a place to learn and get honest second opinions.
Grading in general
Grading companies such as PSA, CGC and Beckett authenticate a card, assess its condition and seal it in a protective slab with a grade, usually on a scale up to 10. Each company has its own standards and style; Beckett, for example, is known for subgrades. Fees, turnaround times and service levels change often, so check each company's current information before submitting.
Is it worth grading?
• Look closely at centring, corners, edges and surface under good light.
• Grading costs money, so it usually makes most sense for valuable cards or cards with personal meaning.
• Compare recent sold prices for raw and graded copies before deciding.
Value checks
Prices move, so we do not treat any figure as fact. When asking, post clear photos of the front and back, name the set and card number, and describe the condition honestly. Recent completed sales are a better guide than asking prices.
Spotting fakes and reproductions
Compare against a known genuine card from the same set: font, colours, energy symbols, holo pattern, card back, finish and thickness. Fake slabs also exist, so check certification numbers on the grading company's own site.
