Hey guys! Big news for PS2 modders, even if it's early days. THE MECHACON HAS BEEN DUMPED On 3 October, DiscoStarslayer published 22 firmware dumps from the SPC970 MechaCon, the security chip in fat PS2s (SCPH-15000 to 39000 series, plus Namco System 246/256 arcade boards). Libby found the exploit. It's hard on the hardware: it took around 1,000 passes and wears out the chip's memory, so don't try it on a console you love. WHAT IT CHANGES • It doesn't give us new ODEs on its own. • It could lead to a modchip that replaces the MechaCon. • It helps future emulation. • It opens the door to a MechaPwn-style unlock for early fat models, which MechaPwn doesn't support today. OPL No new official Open PS2 Loader release. The newest build is the Rick Gaiser fork's 1.2.0 beta from June. WHAT DO YOU THINK? • Would you fit a MechaCon replacement modchip in an early fat PS2 if one comes out? • OPL from USB, network or internal hard drive: which do you use and why? • Show us your modded PS1 or PS2!
