Welcome to Shaders, bezels & CRT looks. Older games were designed for CRT screens, and on a sharp modern panel they can look blocky and harsh. This board is about making emulation look right, whether that means a subtle scanline, a full simulation of a consumer television or a beautiful bezel around the picture.
What belongs here
• CRT shaders such as CRT-Royale, the guest shaders, crt-geom, Mega Bezel and lighter options for weaker hardware
• Shader presets for specific systems, displays and resolutions
• Overlays and bezels, including making and sharing your own artwork
• Integer scaling, aspect ratios, colour, brightness and HDR
• Handheld LCD effects, such as Game Boy grids and ghosting
• Comparison screenshots and setup showcases
What doesn't
• Real CRT televisions, RGB cables and upscalers: CRT gaming
• Emulators that will not run or crash: PC emulation, Android emulation or iPhone & iPad emulation
• Frontend themes and menus: Frontends & launchers
• Arcade cabinet monitors and builds: Arcade, MAME & cabinets
How to ask so people can help
1. Your device, GPU and display resolution
2. The emulator or frontend and its version
3. The shader or preset name, and the shader format (in RetroArch, slang, GLSL or Cg)
4. What you changed, and a screenshot of the result
5. What you have already tried
Starter knowledge
• A shader is a small program that runs on your GPU to process each frame. Simple ones add scanlines; complex ones simulate masks, glow, curvature and colour.
• Heavy shaders need GPU power and a high display resolution to look their best. On a 1080p screen, many CRT shaders look softer than on 4K.
• In RetroArch, shader formats are tied to the video driver. If a preset will not load, check it matches the driver you are using.
• Integer scaling keeps pixels even, which avoids shimmering and uneven scanlines. It may leave borders, which is where bezels come in.
• Bezels and overlays are images placed around or over the game. Make sure the game area lines up with the bezel's cut-out for your resolution.
• Shaders can add a little processing time. If you are sensitive to input lag, compare with the shader off.
• Phone and laptop screen photos rarely show what you see. Use the emulator's screenshot feature when comparing.
Rules
Credit shader and bezel authors when sharing presets or edits, and respect their licences. Do not post artwork you do not have the right to share. KZE is emulation-friendly but never piracy-friendly: no ROMs, ISOs, BIOS files, firmware or keys, and no asking where to find them. No malware and no selling or paid services.
The general house rules apply: be kind, English only (other languages are translated automatically), no spam, no keyboard mashing and no self-promotion spam. Use Report on anything that breaks the rules. This thread is locked, so start your own thread in this board to share a preset or ask for help.
