Welcome to macOS & old Macs.
This forum is for Apple's computers, new and old: current Apple silicon Macs, Intel Macs, PowerPC machines, classic Mac OS and everything in between. macOS tips, OpenCore Legacy Patcher, upgrades and repairs, and keeping older Macs useful long after Apple has moved on all belong here.
What belongs here
• macOS tips, apps and settings.
• OpenCore Legacy Patcher and running newer macOS on older, officially unsupported Macs.
• Hardware upgrades on older Macs, such as SSDs, RAM and batteries, where the model allows it.
• Vintage Macs, classic Mac OS and PowerPC projects.
• Boot Camp and running Linux on a Mac.
• Help and troubleshooting for Macs.
What goes elsewhere
• iPhones and iPads: iPhone & iPad.
• Building or upgrading Windows PCs: PC building & upgrades.
• Linux in general: Linux. Running a Mac as a home server is fine in Homelab & self-hosting.
• Writing Mac apps in depth: Programming & app development.
Starter knowledge
• Know your exact model. 'About This Mac' shows the model name and year, and the model identifier is useful for upgrades and patchers.
• Back up with Time Machine or a full clone before upgrading macOS, using a patcher or swapping drives.
• OpenCore Legacy Patcher is a community project. It works well on many machines, but some features may not work on some models, and you are responsible for what you install. Read its documentation for your model first.
• Many newer Macs have storage and memory soldered to the board, so upgrades are limited. Older models are often much easier to upgrade.
• Old Macs may have swollen batteries or leaking capacitors. Check before powering on something that has been stored for years.
Security on old macOS
Versions of macOS that no longer get security updates, and old browsers, are risky on the internet. Keep important accounts and banking on an up-to-date machine, and treat older Macs as offline or low-risk computers where possible.
Legal and safety rules
• No cracked apps, pirated software or licence key sharing, and no asking where to find them.
• No bypassing Activation Lock, firmware passwords or MDM enrolment on Macs that are not yours. Ask about your own machines only, and be ready to say how you got one.
• No sharing macOS installer images. Use Apple's own sources.
• No malware and no selling or paid services.
When you ask for help
Include the model and year, macOS version, whether it is patched, what you were doing, what you have tried and the exact error.
House rules
The general KZE rules apply: be kind, English only (posts in other languages are translated automatically), no spam, no keyboard mashing and no self-promotion spam. Use Report on anything that breaks the rules.
