Welcome to Game Boy Mods & shell swaps. This board is for making old Game Boys better than new: IPS and OLED screens, backlights, shells, buttons, audio amplifiers, rechargeable batteries and USB-C charging, on every model from the original DMG to the Micro.
What belongs here
• Screen upgrades: IPS and OLED kits, laminated screens, backlights and frontlights.
• Shell swaps, button and membrane replacements, custom paint and lenses.
• Audio mods: amplifiers, speaker upgrades and headphone jack fixes.
• Power mods: rechargeable battery packs, USB-C charging boards, battery replacements in the SP.
• Build logs and finished projects, from simple swaps to full custom builds.
What doesn't belong here
• If your mod has gone wrong and you need help diagnosing it, Help & troubleshooting is a good choice, though mod-specific questions are fine here.
• Collecting and game chat goes in General discussion.
• Making games goes in Homebrew & GB Studio.
Showing off a build
• Post clear photos, ideally before, during and after.
• List the parts you used: screen kit, shell, buttons, battery, any boards.
• Credit other people's work: kit designers, shell makers, and anyone whose guide you followed.
• Share tips and anything you'd do differently. That's what helps the next person.
Starter knowledge
• Check compatibility before buying. Many screen kits need a specific shell or some trimming of the original one.
• Most consoles need a tri-wing screwdriver to open, plus Phillips for the inside.
• Ribbon cables are fragile. Lift connector latches gently, and never pull on the cable itself.
• Some GBC and GBA screen kits need a wire soldered to a point on the board for brightness control. Read the kit's instructions fully before you start.
• The original DMG often has vertical lines on its stock screen; this is a separate fault from the screen kits.
Soldering and battery safety
• Work in a ventilated space, use a stand for your iron, and wear eye protection when clipping leads.
• Use the right temperature and a bit of flux. Too much heat lifts pads.
• Lithium batteries can catch fire if punctured, crushed or shorted. Use packs with protection circuits, insulate connections, and never charge a swollen battery.
• Check polarity twice before applying power.
Selling and services
No selling consoles, parts or modding services on this board. Recommending a kit or a shop you've had good experience with is fine; repeated self-promotion isn't.
House rules
The usual KZE rules apply: be kind, English only (posts in other languages are translated automatically), no spam, no keyboard mashing and no self-promotion spam. Report anything that breaks the rules. This thread is locked, so start your own thread to show us what you've built.
