Before you start
1. Check your motherboard revision, as it affects which mods and upgrades suit your console.
2. Back up your EEPROM before anything else and keep the file safe and private. It holds your console's hard drive key, and without it a failed drive can be hard to recover.
3. Read a current guide from start to finish before running anything.
4. If you are replacing the hard drive, plan how you will lock and prepare the new one.
Worth knowing
• The clock capacitor on the original Xbox motherboard is known to leak with age and can damage nearby traces. Removing it is a common precaution.
• A softmod needs no soldering. A modchip or TSOP flash involves opening the console and, in most cases, soldering. Be honest with yourself about your skill level.
• The original Xbox power supply carries mains voltage. Unplug the console and leave it for a while before opening it.
• Old official online services for the original Xbox are long gone. Community revival projects exist; read their own rules before connecting.
The rules
Homebrew yes, piracy no. Do not link, share or request games, ISOs, BIOS files, dashboards containing Microsoft's files, EEPROMs, keys or firmware, and do not ask where to find them. Back up your own games and use your own console's files. No malware, no selling and no paid modding services.
