Welcome to Mods & upgrades in the Steam Deck & SteamOS forum. This is the workshop: SSD upgrades, replacement screens, shells, buttons, docks, cooling and accessories. What belongs here • SSD swaps and cloning or reinstalling SteamOS afterwards • Replacement and upgraded screens, shells, buttons and sticks • Docks, hubs, cases, grips and charging gear • Repairs you've done yourself, such as stick or fan replacements • Questions before you start a mod What doesn't • Software and emulation setup goes in Emulation on Steam Deck • A Deck that stopped working after a mod is fine in Help & troubleshooting, with full details • General chat goes in General discussion Before you open your Deck 1. Read a reputable teardown guide for your exact model. The LCD and OLED models differ inside. 2. Use the right screwdriver bits and go gently. The screws are easy to strip. 3. Let the battery run down well before opening, and disconnect it before touching anything else, as the guides describe. 4. Use plastic tools for prying, and watch out for ribbon cables. 5. Back up your saves, and have the official recovery image on a USB stick if you're swapping the SSD. 6. Be aware that opening the device or fitting third-party parts may affect your warranty. Check your own situation first. Useful tips • The Deck takes a short M.2 2230 SSD. Check compatibility and heat reports from other owners before buying a drive. • A good microSD card is a simple, no-tools way to add storage, and fine for most games and emulation. • Third-party screens and shells vary in quality and fit. Share your experience honestly, good and bad. • Take photos as you go. They're useful for reassembly and make great guides. Posting rules • Name the parts and brands you used, but no shop links, affiliate links or discount codes. • Disclose if a company sent you parts for free. • No selling, trading or paid modding services. • No malware, and no links to pirated games, BIOS files, keys or pre-loaded drives. House rules Be kind, English only (other languages are translated automatically), no spam, no keyboard mashing and no self-promotion spam. Report anything that breaks the rules.
