Welcome to Windows XP, 7 & older. This subforum is for running, preserving and reviving older versions of Windows: Windows 7, Vista, XP, 2000, 98, 95, 3.1 and even DOS. Period-correct retro gaming PCs, drivers for old hardware, virtual machines, old software that only runs on a certain version, and simply enjoying the nostalgia all belong here. What belongs here • Retro PC builds and restorations. • Finding drivers for older hardware from legitimate sources. • Running old Windows in VirtualBox, VMware, QEMU, PCem, 86Box and similar. • Old games and software you own. • Screenshots, collections and memories. What goes elsewhere • Windows 10 and 11: General discussion, Tweaks & debloating or Help & troubleshooting. • Hardware upgrades in general: PC building & upgrades. • Running old games on modern systems with emulators may also fit KZE's emulation sections. Security: please read These versions of Windows no longer receive security updates, and modern browsers no longer support most of them. Connecting them directly to the internet is risky. • Keep them offline where possible, or on a separate network behind a firewall. • Do not use them for email, banking, shopping or important accounts. • Transfer files with a USB stick or a carefully controlled network share, and scan files on a modern machine first. • A virtual machine with networking disabled is often the easiest safe option. Starter knowledge • Old hardware often needs older drivers. Manufacturer support pages and driver CDs are the best sources. Avoid driver download sites that bundle extra software. • Old hard drives and capacitors fail with age. Back up anything precious and check for bulging capacitors on old motherboards and power supplies. • Very new hardware often lacks drivers for old Windows, so period hardware or a virtual machine is usually easier. Legal rules • Old does not mean free. No sharing Windows ISOs, product keys, activation cracks or 'abandonware' downloads, and no asking where to find them. Use media and keys you own. • No cracked software or warez, no malware samples, and no selling or trading. The general KZE rules apply: be kind, English only (posts in other languages are translated automatically), no spam, no keyboard mashing and no self-promotion spam. Use Report on anything that breaks the rules. This thread is locked, so start your own thread to share your retro build. Dexter
