Welcome to Console modding. This is the place for physically changing consoles you own: shell swaps, modchips, LED and backlight mods, custom paint jobs, button and D-pad upgrades, battery and storage swaps, and anything else that involves opening a console up and making it your own. PSP, Vita, Game Boy, DS, GameCube, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch and the rest are all welcome.
What belongs here
• Shell swaps and transparent or custom-coloured housings
• Modchips, flash carts' hardware side and installation write-ups
• IPS screen and backlight upgrades, LED mods and lighting
• Paint, hydro dipping, decals and custom finishes
• Storage mods such as SD adapters for memory card slots or optical drive replacements
• Planning a mod, asking which parts to buy, and sharing the finished result
What doesn't belong here
• General soldering technique and repairing broken boards: Soldering & repairs
• Dumping or patching console firmware: Firmware & reverse engineering
• Just opening something up to see how it works: Teardowns & deep dives
• Printed shells, grips and stands: the 3D printing forum, especially Designs for consoles & handhelds
• Building a handheld from scratch: DIY handhelds & portables
• Software-only homebrew and custom firmware use belong in the relevant console or homebrew boards
Piracy rules
Modding hardware is legal in most places, but what you do with it matters. We never help with piracy. That means no links to ROMs, ISOs or game downloads, no "where can I get games for this" threads, no selling pre-modded consoles loaded with games, and no sharing of copyrighted BIOS or system files. Talking about backing up games you own, running homebrew and playing your own legally dumped copies is fine.
Posting a mod or build
• Say which console and which revision or motherboard version you have. Many mods depend on it.
• List the parts you used and where the design or kit came from, and credit the people who designed it.
• Clear photos of the work, ideally before, during and after.
• If something went wrong, tell us. Failures teach people as much as successes.
Starter tips
• Check your exact board revision before buying a modchip or screen kit. Kits often only fit specific revisions.
• Take photos of every step as you disassemble, and keep screws organised (a magnetic mat or an ice cube tray works well). Many consoles use screws of different lengths that can damage the board if mixed up.
• Use proper drivers: tri-wing, Pentalobe and security bits are common on consoles. Cheap bits strip screws.
• Ribbon cables and their latches are fragile. Open latches gently before pulling cables.
• Old consoles may have leaking capacitors or batteries. Look before you power them up.
• Discharge and disconnect batteries before working inside handhelds. Never puncture or bend a lithium cell.
• Ground yourself to avoid static damage, and work on a clean, non-carpeted surface.
• Spray painting needs good ventilation and a mask, and paint should fully cure before reassembly.
Selling and services
KZE isn't a marketplace. Please don't advertise paid modding services, sell modded consoles, or ask people to mod a console for you for money.
House rules
The general house rules apply here too: be kind, keep posts in English (anything written in another language is translated automatically), no spam, no keyboard mashing and no self-promotion spam. If you spot something that breaks the rules, use Report and the team will take a look. This thread is locked, so if you have a question, start your own thread in the right board.
